Communicating with and undertaking direct work with children and young people

Summary:

This course is designed to cater for social workers, Guardians, support staff, foster carers, residential workers, youth and community workers, educational and health staff, voluntary organisations, counsellors and any other professional who work directly with children and young people.

The course explores effective and practical ways to communicate and undertake direct work with children and young people in the context of their experiences of trauma, abuse, loss, separation and change. It emphases the need for child centred practice and is of particular use to workers who wish to develop and enhance their skills in order to improve a child / young person’s contributions to reviews, case conferences, investigations, assessments, care planning, LAC and court reports. It can also help with life story work, with interventions designed to assist children and young people through change and transition and with therapeutic work.

The course will involve a mixture of didactic and experiential learning, including taught material, large and small group exercises, demonstrations and opportunities to practice direct work skills. The course aims to provide participants with a range of skills that they can utilise immediately in their work settings and each person will receive a training pack incorporating practical ideas for communication.

Course aims:

  • To provide an understanding of the task and dynamics of communicating with children and young people who have experienced trauma, abuse and loss
  • To consider barriers to communication
  • To explore how workers' feelings, values and personal issues impact upon communication and direct work
  • To offer a range of practical ideas for communication in a safe and child centred way
  • To provide opportunities to practice these ideas
  • To help workers integrate such techniques within their existing workloads
  • To improve planning, report writing and recording of direct work
  • To consider communication and direct work in the context of a child or young person's developmental needs, language, gender, ethnicity, disability or experience of trauma
