Understanding the impact of sexual abuse upon children
Working with and caring for children and families affected by child sexual abuse requires more than an awareness of the signs and symptoms of abuse. It also necessitates an understanding of sex offender dynamics, the impact of trauma and children’s coping strategies. This one day course draws upon our knowledge of sex offending and trauma to enhance participants’ understanding of child sexual abuse and will be of benefit to all practitioners involved in the investigation, assessment, intervention, care and support of children and young people affected by abuse. It is suitable for those with no previous knowledge or experience in this area as well as more experienced professionals It is of benefit to social workers, police, therapists, education and health professionals, substitute carers and anyone involved in the care and support of children and families affected by child sexual abuse. The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises, video and discussion and each participant will receive a handout pack.
Course overview
- To identify some of the myths and facts about child sexual abuse
- To provide an introduction to sex offending dynamics and the impact of this upon children, young people and their families
- To highlight key issues for assessment, case management, intervention and care
- To identify when specialist advice, consultation or intervention is needed
- To provide participants with an opportunity to discuss and share their questions, fears and worries and to consider their future knowledge needs
