Vicky Young, head of the Lucy Faithfull Foundation’s Stop It Now helpline, said:
“Victims and survivors must be believed when they come forward about abuse and then they and other children must be protected. Too often this goes wrong with devastating consequences.
“Unfortunately, some people will always try to work or volunteer in places where they can get access to children. That’s why it’s so important to have a strong system that identifies people who might be a risk to children and stops them from getting jobs where they might be able to harm. When these systems fail, organisations need to learn lessons and change.
“Children are most often abused by someone they know, usually in secret, and it might not be found out about until many years later.
“There are things that all of us can do to keep children safe. Faith groups, schools, youth clubs and sports clubs must have robust and effective safeguarding measures. Professionals, volunteers and families can know the signs to look out for, have regular open conversations with children, and get help if something goes wrong.
“Our message would be that if you have any concerns, it’s always better to trust your gut and talk to someone. The experienced advisors on our anonymous Stop It Now helpline can give you information and advice. Call 0808 1000 900 or visit stopitnow.org.uk.”
